Hello Parisa,

Drop down fields are designed to import as open text, so that values such as "Normal", " normal", or "n ormal" would not get filtered out during the import process when those values were likely intended to be the value "normal". Although there is not an option to filter this data during the import, you can filter and remove this data quite easily after the import.

To filter and remove any data that is not one of your drop down values, you can run a spreadsheet with nothing but your drop down field and query the data using the "is not in" operator. For example, if I had a drop down field called "color" and wanted to filter any data that is not "red", "white" or "blue" I can run the spread sheet with the following query:

color | is not in | red,white,blue

This is essentially the same as having three rows where color does not equal each of those three values. You can then highlight the column, right click and "cut" the data from these rows. This will remove all data that does not match my 3 drop down values.

Does this help?

Hi,
I am trying to import an Access file containing all sort of data fields from drop down menus to text fields. The idea is to import the file without any free text. We only want the data that meet the criteria of our previously set field format to make changes to our Progeny fields. For example if a field in Access contains word "normal" but in Progeny the field has been set as a drop down menu field and on the list there is no "normal" , we don't want the word "normal" to be appeared in our field in Progeny. Is that possible?

Thank you in advance,

Good question. This is an "Action" option, though it can only be enabled if you are accepting your default naming convention automatically.

1. Edit the reaction "Create Aliquot" so that you 'accept default naming convention'. Save.
2. Edit the new action and select the now enabled option to "prompt for number of aliquots to create". Save.

This will prompt the first message for the action to specify the number of aliquots you want to create.

Thanks for the post!

No problem. I think this indicates the problem you are seeing clearly enough.

The issue you are seeing is due to the fact that flat field data and table data cannot be imported together. What you would need to do is run the import once for your flat field data, and then run the exact same import again checking the box to "Import into table rows only". This will import your table row data.

Does this clarification address the issue you are having?

Hi,
I was trying to import individuals. I created a new spread sheet(SS) by clicking on new SS and selecting a Tabel field and couple of flat fields (including Global ID) from warehouse. Next created a query based on that SS and then exported that to an previously saved Excel file ( in Text, tab delimited format), made some changes and added a new row with made-up data (just for practice). Then I wanted to import that file back into Progeny. When I did that, only some of the new data appeared in Progeny and some fields came up blank. That was my problem. Sorry! my first question was not really clear.
Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for the post and welcome to the Progeny community :)

In regard to your question, there are many options for importing data, XML, .txt pedigrees, FAM files, Import Module and importing directly into the spreadsheet as you mentioned, so it really depends on what you are importing. Can you explain in a little more detail what you are trying to import (Pedigrees, Individuals, Samples etc.) and where the data that you are importing is coming from? That would help to identify the most appropriate method.

Thanks!

I am a studend who has been introduced to Progeny 7 a week ago. So I have many questions to ask. For starter, are there any other way to export queries than using export button? because when I export my equeies, the file doesn't directly open up in Excel. There is always a notepad version of that file which I have to open it in Excel, manipulate, and import it back into Progeny. However, it is not possible to import it directly, again I have to import the notepad version into Progeny. I will appreciate your help.
Thanks

Alright, I'm not seeing any errors when I clear genotypes, but I do know that we resolved some issues with your live database that may be the cause of this error. Please do keep me updated if you see this in your live database, and we can take a closer look.

Actually, I must clarify my previous post. It is in fact necessary that your individual names be in the format of [Pedigree Name]_[UPN] in order for the renaming of the pedigree name to filter down to the pedigree members.

This being the case, if your goal is to have all pedigree members to be renamed as the [Pedigree Name]_[UPN] then you will need to run the SQL code to update them. Changing the pedigree name after that will rename all individuals once they are in the correct format.

Update: I am only getting this error in an older testing version of our database, but not in our real networked clean database. If I see this error recur in our real database I will post again. Otherwise, this may be an artifact of something that has already been fixed, so let's not worry about it for now. Thanks.

I am trying to clear genotypes for a select number of markers. In the Clear Genotypes interface, for Pedigrees, I selected 5 folders of individuals to clear (and included all selected individuals). For selecting markers, I tried both dragging and dropping an individual marker, as well as querying for the marker based on a marker field. In both cases, I got the error:

"A database error caused Clear Genotypes to fail"

However, it looks like the genotypes have actually been cleared. The Error message makes me nervous about what is going on behind the scenes, though. Help?

So if we have not renamed the ped and we have an Indname in the wrong format, we would need to either rename the ped or run SQL to get the update to happen, correct?

All Individual Names will be updated regardless of their format. It is not necessary that they be named [Pedigree Name]_[UPN] prior to the name change of the pedigree. So no need to run that SQL.

NOTE: Individual Names will ONLY be renamed if you change the name of the pedigree. This will not rename all of your individuals during the update to 8.2.01, s if you have purposefully modified Individual Names inside of a pedigree, these names will be retained until you rename the pedigree.

That sounds great that Individual Name will automate to [Pedigree Name]_[UPN]! We are currently running 8.2.01 right now and still have some Individual Names that are not in this format. In order to convert those, will we need to run the SQL code to do the conversion (i.e. UPDATE st_data SET Indname = NNNN_N), and then everything will match from now on? Or would you expect those old names to have been given the new format with the new version?

Thanks!

Is it possible to set a conditional validation on a field? I have a field that needs to be flagged as required if a specific Check Box field = Y. Otherwise, the field can remain null.

@swfouchier, in response to your post:

>>
It's to bad that if you change the Pedigree Name the Individial Name does not change with it. Is there a possiblility that this will happen?
Also it it kinda strange that Progeny itself is not able to make an unique identifier. This is especially important for export and import data via spreadsheets. Or did I miss something?
<<

You will be happy to know that this feature was added to the latest release 8.2.01! Any time you rename a pedigree the Individual Names within that pedigree automatically get renamed to [Pedigree Name]_[UPN].

Additionally, we have enabled a feature that allows you to place unique validations on both Pedigree Name and Individual Name which allows you to import globally across the database using Individual Name as a Unique Key.

I will modify this post shortly with a link to a feature video.

Hello Toby,

This is a known issue and one that we cannot do much about without a pretty big change to the code and it may take some time to implement into a release. The problem is that Sybase interprets the values as fitting a date mask and tries to display the value as a date. The easiest way to get around this issue is to simply break the mask.

If you were to simply insert a prefix or a suffix into the string, you wouldn't run into this issue. Would that work for you to have a prefix of "LID-" for instance to represent your local ID? If that is acceptable you can use the following:

'LID-' + {Pedigree name} + {localid}
