I agree. Being able to tile windows in progeny would be very useful. It seems like it would be a good way to compare two pedigrees to each other, do data entry while looking at the pedigree etc.

I've had this request from other Progeny users as well. We are monitoring the popularity of this request in our database and would consider adding it to the software in the future if other users would also find it valuable.

Hello Betty,

You can generate initials in a computed field based off the data fields "First Name", "Middle Name" and "Last Name", for instance, with the following computed field structure:

             substring({Demographics\First Name}, 0, 1) + substring({Demographics\Middle Name}, 0, 1) +
substring({Demographics\Last Name}, 0, 1)

Simply substitute the fields above (i.e. {Demographics\First Name}) with your own data fields and the computed field will take the first character from each field.

Thanks for the question!

Hi,

An older version of Progeny would allow you to view a pedigree and data spreadsheet simultaneously. This made data entry much faster; name, age, dx, smoking status, whatever.

A new function that would be helpful would be the ability to select multiple individuals in the pedigree and change the vital status of all at one time.

Any chance of returning/adding these functions?

I currently have pedigrees created in Progeny, with peoples' names listed. Is there a way to create a field to just list these peoples' initials (rather than their full name)? If yes, is there a way to set-up the field so that it can take the full names to automatically generate the initials (instead of having to manually type in the intials of every single person on the pedigrees)? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I guess a data dictionary feature "up front" would be useful.

However, If you already use MS Access or some other front end to link to the Progeny database, it is easy to output the st_datadictionary table to a query or report.

Thanks Jamie,

You could also create a table that has a hyperlink field in it. This would allow you to link multiple images by adding rows for the table.

I have just recently started using Progeny 7 after a lot of work has been put into developing the database and the pedigrees. We are interested in digitizing a number of studies onto Progeny but we are running into a few issues such as the need to attach multiple scanned documents to an individual.

Using the Cancer Example from Demo as an example, what if we wished to attach images (scanned documents) of an individual's cancer(s) . One person in the pedigree may not have cancer while another could have multiple. Do we have to put in multiple fields into the data sheet and will that have to apply to each individual? If this is the case, can we alter the heading for each field to better describe what is being linked or shown?

Lastly, is this a reasonable, or feasible, route to take for trying to attach scanned records, documents, or images?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The search feature will search by Alias name in a set but Marker name in 'All Markers'. So, if you have a different name stored as the alias from the marker name you will not be able to find it. Please search by the alias name after you added the marker to the set. The search should find that it was added appropriately to the set.

We have a few markers that are in all markers that we can't get to add to sets. I have tried adding it to the set by right clicking on the set and selecting 'add markers to this set'. It seems like it gets added (and the others that were with it are added) but when we try to import into the set or search the set it can't be found. Are there any restrictions on marker names or perhaps the alias for markers in marker sets? The names seem particularly long, so I am wondering if there is a restriction on the number of characters? Thanks!

Thank you for your post Manuel! CancerGene does include the algorithm for calculating the risk calculation but it does not include a separate exe for the algorithm. The export was designed for the stand alone exe of BRCAPRO. Our users have notified us that CancerGene uses an updated algorithm in comparison to the stand alone exe. For that reason, we do not recommend exporting the data directly to the old exe. We are considering different options for interfacing/exporting the data directly to CancerGene in the future.

1) We have also used lookup tables to do something like what you describe in #1. I think that might work perfectly for ICD9 codes since there are so many and you can import the list of how they match up to the value you select.

2) When we have used the image field for documents or images it can be kind of tricky because if you adjust the size of the field it can distort the image and you don't always have the best dimensions or quality of the picture. We have started using the hyperlink field and linking to a folder location that contains files like images or scanned documents for that subject. That works well unless the path of the file changes (also a problem for the image field) since the image and documents are not actually stored in the db, just the path to where they are saved.

Thanks for your post Kisha!

1. You can create a computed field that would take the value from the drop-down menu and then display an ICD9 code if that value is present. If your drop-down menu is in a table, then your computed field would also need to be in that table.

2. You can create an image field in Progeny to handle the scanned images. Go to the Fields section to create the field and select the field type 'Image'. Then you can click in the image field on the datasheet, select the image that you want to appear and then click outside of the field box. The image will then appear for you on the datasheet.

Thanks for your post Lauren!

When you reopen the sample, are you referring to the tab that displays the sample name? A field on the sample datasheet? Please clarify.

If you are a LIMS user, the barcode will not be renamed if you rename the sample. You can create an action in the database to update the barcode in this instance.

I have a sample that is entered into progeny with the wrong label. I have tried to change this by editing the properties. I correct the sample name and select save at which point I get a message stating that the change has been successfully saved. When I re-open the sample however the sample appears with the old label. Any thoughts?
